Thu Sophannarith was born in 1960 and graduated from the Fine Art School in Phnom Penh. All kinds of art education and training remained idle during the Khmer Rouge period and the work of artists did not start to flourish again until 1980s and 90s. Thu Sophannarith is one of the most well known Cambodian oil painters. His works mostly focus on traditional Khmer subjects and nature which he executes with the rapid strokes of a palette knife and a thick layer of paint. He has exhibited frequently in Cambodia and also in Germany (2003), China (2004) and Vietnam (2004)
