Below is a selection of paintings and collages by Martin Collins. After his last exhibition in New York (Right Bank Gallery, Williamsburg, 2000), Collins came to Thailand on the suggestion by an old artist friend living there, with a view to making a new body of work to take back to New York. He traveled from The Big Apple to The Big Mango (Bangkok) and settled in a traditional Thai wooded teak house on stilts situated on a small island in the mighty Chao Phraya river as the only foreigner in a Mon tribe ceramic artisan community. He lived on the river for two years, before moving to downtown Bangkok where his preoccupation with Bangkok buildings and cityscape overtook him Below is a selection of his paintings, informed by the river-scape and cloud formations and reflective river light, which surrounded him. He has also continued his mixed media and collage works; a selection of which are included here. The paintings and collages of his "tribal period" culminated in the exhibition titled The Inside Job held at Siam Art-Space Gallery, Bangkok in 2003.
