Vietnamese Artists | Van Duong Thanh

Van Duong Thanh was born in Phu Yen Province and studied painting for twelve years during difficult times of war where she often was evacuated to the countryside, either hiding in tunnels or finding shelter with the peasants of the area. It was during these years that she developed a tremendous empathy for the rural way of life and the country's traditions. After the war ended, she completed her formal education at the Fine Art University of Hanoi in 1980. Van Duong Thanh mostly leans towards an expressive, semi-abstract style with bright colours. She lives partly in Vietnam and partly in Sweden where she teaches painting. She studied with the late, famous painter Bui Xuan Phai and is represented by several paintings in the Vietnam Fine Art Museum as well as in Singapore Art Museum. She has staged many shows in Vietnam and abroad, such as in France (1992), Thailand (1992, 1993, 1995, 2001, 2003, 2005), Singapore (1993, 1994, 1995, 1997), Hong Kong (2002), Germany (2003), USA (2004), and Sweden (1987 - 2006).
